QC to develop a department for micro and small enterprises

Quezon City Vice-Mayor Joy Belmonte has pushed for the creation of a new department at the city hall in a bid to promote micro and small enterprises and make way for an improved life for the people.

Belmonte noted that the City Council has long passed Ordinance No. 96, Series of 2013 that establishes the "Micro and Small Enterprise Development Council (MSEDC)" but it has not been implemented until now.

"In my view we should really endorse micro-entrepreneurship and help those micro-entrepreneurs to level up, help them with their product development, with marketing, training, and loans," Belmonte said in an interview.

"It's because I think the future lies with entrepreneurs in general," Belmonte added.

Belmonte, whose top priorities include jobs creation and employment, noted that many people are hesitant to start small businesses due to lack of capital and know-how, thus the need to put up the MSEDC to cater to their needs and interests.

The creation of such a department, Belmonte pointed out, will also boost the city government's efforts to address the perennial problem of poverty and lack of jobs and empower people to contribute to the city government's continued economic growth.

"It will encourage micro-entrepreneurs to reach out and seek help from the city," the vice mayor said.

Under the ordinance, small business owners will be exempted from paying registration fees and other fees for enterprises with a capital of not more than P50, 000.

She added that there will also be skills development and training seminars on business management and marketing.

An advocate of women's rights and welfare, Belmonte started her "Women In Economics" forum in the barangays recently to pitch her various programs for women such as the "Tindahan ni Ate Joy" livelihood assistance for unemployed single mothers.

Belmonte has also been providing micro-entrepreneurs with free commercial spaces at several shopping malls to help them grow their businesses.
